This information was provided by
Andrew G. Ollenburg, Fort Peck Hatchery Manager. Thanks Andrew!
The Multi-Species Hatchery in Fort Peck has 40 outdoor rearing ponds, 8-½ acre, 23-1 acre, and 9-2 acre in size.
These ponds are used to raise cool/warm water fish to fingerling size.
These fish include walleye, northern pike, bass, catfish, and panfish.
8 raceways are located on the north side of the building. These raceways are used for
holding salmon brood fish and also for raising salmon fingerlings.
Inside the building we have 48 rectangular rearing tanks. Each of these 1,000-gallon tanks has
3 separate water sources plumbed to them- raw water, cold-treated water,
and heated-treated water. With the flexibility these different water
sources provide, a wide variety of fresh water fish can be raised indoors
in this easily controlled environment.
A separate room as constructed at the hatchery to grow the federally endangered pallid
sturgeon. 12- 6-foot circular tanks were installed for the rearing of
pallid sturgeon fingerlings.
All water is pumped at the hatchery, requiring large 200hp electric pumps. Hatchery staff is
on call 24hrs/day, 7 days/week to respond to emergencies and alarms at the
hatchery that could potentially threaten production.
The visitor center and conference room at the hatchery are open 7days/week. Various displays
and information are there for the public to see. Tours are available by
appointment only by calling 406-526-3689.
