June - Upper Missouri River Chapter
What a great time! The pavilion at the Silo's Campground was a perfect venue
for this event and we couldn't have ordered up any better weather. There
were 23 boats, 70 volunteers (most of them UMRC members), 97 kids in bright
green T-shirts designed by Top Signs and Graphics and at least that many
parents and other family members.
Dave Hagengruber and Adam Strainer from FWP presented the Fish
Identification session, which included several fish mounts. They also
assisted with the shore fishing. The Coast Guard Auxiliary - Carl Hutchinson
and his assistant fitted all the kids with life jackets and passed along
their boat/water safety information.
I'm not sure how many fish were caught - shore fishing was better than
expected, which kept the kids on the shoreline - tree limbs and all. I know
by now you heard about the 14 pound Walleye and 18 pound Carp. Also on the
catch list were other nice sized Walleye, Rainbow Trout and Perch. The Trout
and Carp were not only caught out on the lake, but also on shore. It's
amazing what the Rods & Reels from Capital Sports, Wally Newville's sinkers,
Kit's Tackle, and Sportsmans Edge night crawlers were landing. The
kids were so engrossed in fishing - both on and off shore - they wouldn't
stop for hot dogs! And those hot dogs from Bob's Thriftway were the best and
tasted great with the chips from the Fish Tales.
John Harrington came out from the Independent Record with his photographer.
He spent almost 2 hours interviewing the kids, parents and UMRC volunteers.
I think his article an excellent overview of the day. Unfortunately they
arrived right after the big Walleye was released. This was an awesome event
made possible by the dedicated volunteers of UMRC. I can't say enough about
how well it all worked - every one did their part! This group works like a
well oiled machine.

NMS Hooked on Fishing Not Drugs:
NMS fishing club went to Ulm FAS to clean up the access area. Like we have
found in the past, this wasn’t a bad job. We only got 11 bags of garbage
and it took about 2 hours. The rest of the time we enjoyed being out doors.
Special thanks to George Likeness for providing a great dinner, Alex
Ferguson for being our Cook, Bill and Bud for driving our Bus, and Warden

the the Missouri River and a a few fisherman have Promised a floating trip
again. We are all looking forward to this! Hope you all have time to take a
child outdoors!
