Great Falls Walleyes Unlimited will be hosting a Kids’ Fishing Camp on August 15, 16, 17 at Tiber Reservoir.  We will be accepting 50 applicants from boys or girls from ages 11-15 to attend.  Included in the 3 day, 2 night camp are safety courses, on and off water activities, and a Fish, Wildlife and Parks sponsored safety course.  Seminars on fishing techniques, technologies, strategies, uses of current fishing technologies, and spinner making are planned.  We plan on having 2 to 3 children per boat for on the water instruction.  Life jackets will be provided and are mandatory anytime kids are on the water

Fresno

Congratulations to Jim Rettig being re-elected as the Region 2 director

The Fresno Chapter had their first meeting of the “new season” Wednesday, September 12 at Blackies’ Tavern.  Numerous thank you notes received throughout the summer were read.  An email from Laura Leslie, our area biologist, announcing her resignation and move to another position out of state was also read.

Chapter funds are down after the busy 2006-2007 expenses for banquet, kids’ projects, scholarships, campground and pavilion upkeep, and tournament, however this is usual for the start of the year.

The chapter is anxiously awaiting the announcement from the state level of the new 501c3 status.  The state board meets this weekend in Glasgow and it is hoped this will be finalized so all chapters can benefit.  For Fresno Chapter, this will allow us to have the Goggins’ property title changed from the HARP (Havre Association of Recreation & Parks) to Walleyes Unlimited.

There was some concern expressed about the BOR’s leasing of their land surrounding state waterways.  Currently recreational land leasers with cabins, ramps, docks, etc. pay a fee to lease these properties.  It is rumored the BOR may be ending this option and requiring the land be returned to its “original form.”  (So, does this mean that all surrounding ‘improvements’ must be moved or removed and the land returned to grass?)  “Keep your eyes and ears open” or better yet, contact your legislators with your thoughts concerning this rumored move by the BOR.

A donation box will be placed at the Pavilion/Campground for users to show their appreciation for the use of the facilities.  The drainage problem will be looked into.  Also the weeds will be taken care of.

Hugh suggested a letter be sent to area businesses to thank them for their past and future support of the chapter and let them know the dates of our banquet and tournament so they may budget for their generous donations.

We will also look into sponsoring something more for the area youth besides just our education day and fun fishing day.  Also “new blood” is needed for our board so all were encouraged to find more interested members.

TENTATIVE DATES for Fresno Chapter events:  Banquet, Saturday, March 22, 2008.  Fresno Walleye Challenge Tournament, Saturday and Sunday, June 14 & 15, 2008  (Fathers’ Day Weekend).  Please note these are only tentative dates.  They are not “etched in stone” and are definitely subject to change, but they are what the Fresno Chapter is looking at as of now.  The Fresno Chapter would appreciate input concerning these dates.

With no further business the meeting adjourned.  Next meeting will be October 2nd or 9th and President Lamphier will notify all when, where, and time.

                                                Respectfully submitted,

                                                Nora Grubb, Fresno Chapter Secretary.

Flathead

We just finished our banquet with about 240 attendees everyone had a good meal, good time and got home safe.
We are in the preliminary stages of a very worthwhile project that should be win-win for everyone involved. Region one fisheries head Jim Vashro wants to cut down, or eliminate the yellow perch population in Lake Mary Ronan ( a small lake that used to be known for rainbow and kokanee Salmon).
A few years back they were netting them and dumping them into a gravel pit. Somehow Walleyes talked them into live trapping and transporting them to Fresno? and Tiber? Jim was at out last meeting and said this could not be done this year for lack of manpower, Our chapter will do as much labor as needed to net and load them on our end, and I told him that our Eastern chapters would be glad to accept the fish and provide manpower as needed on the other end. Since we have no Walleyes here most of us fish the same waters as you, and know that the perch populations are down in some impoundments. We are waiting for some feedback locally, and would appreciate and help to get the ball rolling. Thanks Mark
