Thanks To Luckie Bethel for all of the recaps from
this years Walleyes Unlimited Circiut!
FRESNO WALLEYE TOURNAMENT
The Montana Walleye Circuit kicked off at Fresno reservoir on May
22-23 with the Fresno Challenge. The tourney field was full with 102
teams fishing for pay outs of over $4,000 for daily weights and over
$6000 for final weights. The great weather in pre fish had the bite
on fire and talks of records being set were being heard in the camp
grounds. But we must remember it was the "Fresno Challenge", the
weather will always be a key factor, and it did.
DAY ONE: weather of solid rain and signs of snow being pushed by high
northwest winds met the teams from the start and never let up.
Temperatures barely found the 40's which made this one of the worst
days in the history of the tourney. But the teams went at it and the
fishing wasn't all that bad. 299 walleyes were weighted, even one by
the leading team of Kenny Williams and Travis Scott of Lewistown,
that hit the 8.32 lb mark. This fish, along with some good small
fish, gave the Lewistown boys 14.27 lbs for day one which was the
leading weight and collected a $900 check for best total weight and
$990 for biggest walleye. But there were 46 other teams that had all
5 of their fish and were just waiting to get that one bite to move up
the latter.
DAY TWO: the weather took it somewhat easy, but temperatures were
colder and so was the fishing, with only 285 walleyed weighted. 38
teams filled their cards in hope of cashing in checks. Then there was
Ken Druyvestein of Polson and Dick Wunderlich of Ronan, that found
themselves with a real nice 8.08 lb walleye and along with 4 others
they weighted 13.23 lbs. The big eye got them the $990 for big fish
and their total weight was the best for day two which cashed them in
another $900. More important it took them from 16th place overall
after day one to be the overall first place winner with a total
weight of 20.29 lbs. That cashed them even another check for $2000.
Some other top teams folded, went down, while lower teams came up to
replace them.
FINALS PAYOUTS: the $6000 plus for overall final best weights was
paid down to 11th place. While the top 13 best weights each day found
checks. The mixed couple team of Gordon and Tanya Matson of Ennis,
took that prize home with a fine total weight of 13.88 lbs.
Adult/child went to a Great Falls team, Terry Eisenbarth and his son
Cody, on a nice weight of 12.76 lbs. Biggest northerns each day
cashed checks for $780. On day one it went to Steve Worden and Cory
Loecker of Great Falls with a 3.52 lb fish. On day two, Leonard
Robert and Tim marsh, cashed in on a very fine 20.40 pound fish. The
Best Lund Boat Award went to the winning team of
Druyvestein and Wunderlich. There were 5 special "JIMMY AWARDS" of
$100 each given out to random draw teams by the Chapter in honor of
Jim Redtigg who passed away this last year of cancer. In the
end over 30 teams went home with a check or merchandise or both.
To the sponsors and to the Havre Walleye Unlimited Chapter goes the
huge thanks for running such a fine event. When asked if they
were ready for next year , the reply was WE WERE BORN READY UP

| TIBER WALLEYE TOURNAMENT
STORY LINE: the second Montana Walleye Tournament Circuit is history.
On June 12-13 the Tiber Walleye Tourney was held. The water was down 6
feet plus from last year and that along with a perch production not
seen in years, made the eyes tough to catch. Teams were also faced with
pre fish of high winds and rain. The campground faces were wet,
wind burnt and confused. Talk was few fish but nice size, 3 a day made
you stage.
DAY ONE: the weather became the teams best friend with sunshine and
very low winds putting smiles on faces. The fishing stayed tough, only
127 eyes were weighted with only 4 teams filling their 5 fish card and
51 taking a zero. For team 36, Robert and Terry Mills of Great Falls,
things couldn't go much better, they boated a very nice 9.64 lb eye
take took the big eye pot of $1,100 and managed to get a 9.75 lb
northern that got them that big fish pot of $970. Their big walleye and
another small one gave them 10.82 lbs for the day and another check for
second best day weight of $750. However there was a team with even a
better day weight.
Team 85, Dan Chovanak of Helena and Brain Olson of Havre, turned in a
full card of 5 eyes for 11.62 lbs that got them 1st place day money of
$1000. It only took 3.5lbs to make stage this first day, so the whole
field was still very much in it.
DAY TWO; the weather again was great, in the 70's and very little wind
the entire day. The fishing did better, with some teams following
leaders to a better bite . There was 155 eyes weighted, 11 teams filled
a card and 48 took zero's. But some top teams fell and new teams came
up the ranks. Like team 64 of Bruce Turney and Corky Roberts of
Townsend , MT, who had zero the 1st day came in with 12.98 lbs on day 2
good for top day money of $1000. They also won the Cold Under Pressure
Award for moving up
64 positions. Another couples team number 6 of Jim and Jerry Schwartz
of Great Falls, came from one fish on day one to a full card day 2 for
10.56 lbs good for second place day money of $750. Biggest walleye for
the day came from team11, Chris Mundel of Coram, MT and Ron Newton of
Columbia Falls, MT, it was 4.26 lbs and got them the $1,100 check. The
biggest northern pot went to couples team 56 ,Bob and Kate Bahr of
Great Falls, with a nice 8.1 lb fish that got them $970. Again 23
places were paid down and it took 4.74 lbs to make stage.
FINAL PAY OUTS; there was $9,975 paid out to the top 13 teams with the
best two day weight. The winner were team 36, Robert and Terry Mills of
Great Falls, who got 7.66 lbs on day two for a 2 day total of 18.48.
They took home the traveling trophy and another check for $3000. The
leaders, team 85, Chovanak and Olson, brought in 4.64 lbs day 2 for
total 2 day weight of 16.26 lbs and good for 2nd place and $1500. The
Mixed Couple Award went to the tourney winner, the Mills couple, with
18.48 lbs. There was 2 places given out in Adult/Child Awards with team
14, Earnest Berg of Power and Cody Berg of Valier taking 2nd with a 5.6
lbs total and team 112, Jeff and Jesse Seliskar of Helena, taking top
honors with 8.72 lbs. The top lund finish for $500 went to Gordon and
Tonya Matson of Ennis, MT. There were many other prizes given out at
this tourney, like closest to weight day one, middle of the field each
day, and the very popular multi species award daily.
This tourney uses the true 3 in 1 format which has 20% of the field (23
teams) getting day money and 10% (13 teams) getting final day money.
There was $6,300 paid out daily and $9,975 paid out in finals. This
gave the teams back $22, 575 of their $22, 600 entry fees, very near
100% payout. With this unbelievable format over 40 teams took home
checks from the tourney.
To the sponsors of the tourney goes a huge thanks for without them the
special prizes could not happen. To the Tiber Tourney Committee and the
Great Falls Chapter of Walleyes Unlimited go the honor of running one
of the best tourney's in the state. When asked how they do it year
after year they just say BUILD IT , THEY WILL COME.

CANYON FERRY WALLEYE
FESTIVAL
STORY LINE: Over the weekend of June 26-27 a full field of 150
teams at the Canyon Ferry Walleye Festival went at the task of fishing
for the $10,000 check. The pre-fish seemed to have most everyone saying
"where did the fish go?". Numbers of small fish had some of the field
thinking go for small ones, ,while others thought the roll the dice to
go after the big ones was the way. The story would be told....no high winds, for both days,
it made the fishing conditions very good so the
story would be told at the score board each day.
DAY ONE: Reading the score board showed only 13 teams filled the 5 fish
card, with 305 fish weighted for an average of 1.63 lbs. There were 7
eyes over ten lbs weighted, but the lack of the nice 2 & 3 lb fish was
so evident. Team 83, Jerry Sobol of East Helena and Jim Gillespie of
Helena, did their best by netting two nice eyes at 13.69 lbs and 8.08
lbs. These, along with two small ones, gave them a good 24.44 lb weight
and the lead after day one. But team 2, Gary Brockway and Scott Sutton
of East Helena, kept it in reach with a nice 14.72 eye and 4 others
that gave them 21.52 lbs. Then it dropped off fast, teams had one good
fish or a bag with small ones. Biggest eye went to team 139, Brian
Perin of Bozeman and Terry Thomas of Big Sky, with a 15.08 lb eye that
got them the big fish pot of $1,410. Some teams, like team 38 , Rodger
Vetter and Ron Brug of Totson, made boating a 23.75 inch carp and a 38
inch northern
the thing to do. The carp got them a pot of $450, the northern got them
another $100. Now the question was, could the leaders get fish on day
two and hold on, or would the luck of the big fish move to another
hook?
DAY TWO: The weather cooperated and the teams went at it again. This
day seen 337 legal fish weighted in but the average dropped to 1.52 lbs
per fish. More teams (24) filled their cards as the best bite spots got
hit even harder. There were 5 eyes over the ten pounds weighted, the
largest one came from team 66, Tim and Don Rohlf of Great Falls with a
14.03 eye that got them the $1,410 pot. But the story line was two
teams that found their way back into the hunt. Team 56, Travis Scott
and Kenny Williams of Lewistown, pulled another one of their known come
backs by boating 4 legal fish with two on them being twins at 10.52 lbs
giving them a 23.19 lb bag for the day. Then there was team 46, Robert
Hickey of Kalispell and Jason Mundel of Coram, that put together a full
card of 5 fish, one of them being 13.02 lbs, giving them a 24.25 bag
for the day. No northerns were caught so the $100 bill was safe.
FINAL PAYOUTS: The tourney paid out $27, 550 to the top 25 places. This
years $10,000 first place check went to the first day leaders, team 83,
Scobel and Gillespie, who picked up only one fish on day two but it was
a nice 7.82 lb eye that gave them a winning weight of 32.26. The fast
charging team 56, Scott and Williams, fell short but did move into
second place with 28.19 lbs for the tourney and collected the $5,000.
Team 98, Joe Hovley of Townsend and Doug Hovley of Helena, found third
place with 27.13lbs, good for not only the $2,500 but was also the Top
Lund Boat winner good for another $400. The team of Hickey and Mundel,
number 46, moved them selves all the way to fourth place money of
$1,250 with 26.58 lbs for the tourney. Mixed couple team number 28,
Gorden and Tanya Matson of Ennis, managed a total weight 19.20lbs to
get them the top Mixed Couple Award money of $200 and overall place of
7th for another
$800. Team 85, Lyn Zeadow and Jim Carter of Townsend, moved 103 spots
on day two to get the Cool Under Pressure Award and the new trailer
tires . The top Adult/Child Award went to team 140, the father/son team
of Dan and Kasey Chovanak of Helena with 9.11 lbs good for $200.
The Tourney is now history but it left sound facts that this fishery
needs different management in order to get back the quality walleyes it
once had. To the new Tourney Director, Dennis Hoven and his Crew goes
the thanks that they just put together the largest Montana Walleye
Circuit Tourney and it went so smooth. To the Sponsors goes the thanks
that they helped make this Tourney what it is. When asked what the
Tourney Crew seen for next year they said "GET US THE FISH BACK BEFORE
IT'S TO LATE".
